The programme of returning solid highly active waste (HAW) from the UK to Japan has continued with the departure of the purpose-built vessel, the Pacific Grebe, today, January 9th, carrying the transport of the third consignment of HAW from Sellafield to Japan.

An American engineering group that was criticised by the National Audit Office for its running of the Sellafield nuclear site has dropped out of bidding for a new taxpayer-funded £7 billion contract to decommission Britain’s oldest reactors.

The Sellafield nuclear complex in West-Cumbria was involved in almost half of all the accidents transporting radioactive materials in 2011, the government’s Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has revealed. In 18 of the 38 incidents recorded on an official database, the radioactive cargo was being moved to or from Sellafield. Shipments were made to nuclear sites in the UK and abroad.

Marianne Birkby The High Level Liquid Waste (HLLW) stream at Sellafield is fiercely radioactive – so much so that it is self-heating and needs to be constantly cooled. This is achieved by a system of pipework inside the HLLW tanks which carry cold water. It is important that the cooling system in the high level waste tanks is kept running constantly – otherwise the high level wastes in the tank could get so hot that they boiled. If the cooling problem was still not sorted out, the tank would eventually boil dry.
